In photography, timing is everything, and having to wait for menus to appear can cost you a shot. I would be more forgiving if the P7000 was a $199 camera, but it costs 2.5 times more than that. It's definitely worth looking at, considering all it has to offer, but you should absolutely, positively try one out to see if you can deal with its sluggishness.

Review : The Nikon CoolPix P7000 is a high-end compact camera released in September 2010 as a successor to the P6000. It drops to a 10.1MP CCD sensor (versus 13.5MP) and trades away LAN connectivity and GPS functionality, but hosts a wider f/2.8-5.6 zoom range, an improved 7.1x optical zoom, a larger 3" TFT LCD monitor, and an HDMI mini connector. The previously mentioned downgrades are considered by critics to be a fair trade for the gains introduced—including an electronic spirit level, an additional control dial, and more customization options. They say the P7000 has manual controls for virtually ever setting, not to mention RAW support, a 720p/24 movie mode, and an optical viewfinder and accessory hot shoe. The new camera's design leaves little guessing over which major rival they're taking on with the Nikon P7000, but as is often the case in industrial design, few other forms would work as well. Though the Nikon P7000 lacks the Canon G12's swiveling LCD, it has a longer 7x zoom and a higher-resolution, 921,000 dot LCD. Sensor size is identical, though, at 10 megapixels, and the emphasis on plentiful external controls is also obvious. Photographer-favorite features like the Shutter speed, ISO, and White balance Bracketing feature show the Nikon P7000's target market, and the Virtual horizon indicator makes it easier to level the camera for fewer crooked horizon lines.
