The Nikon D5100 digital SLR camera is a newer version of the Nikon D5000 that provides an updated 16.2 megapixel DX format CMOS sensor. With an ISO range of 100-6400 and an EXPEED 2 image processing engine, this camera is able to capture clear photographs, even in low light. With updated recording from the D5000 models HD 1280x720p video feature, this camera offers HD 1920x1080p, for higher quality movies. Equipped with a High Dynamic Range, in pictures encompassing extreme contrasts, it combines two exposures to offer cleaner and crisper photographs. Also, the swivel vari-angle LCD monitor, has been enlarged from 2.7 on the D5000 model to 3 inches, and an extra side hinge has been added to increase the flexibility range, allowing pictures to be taken from more angles. Finally, offering a new effects mode, pictures can be taken with a variety of creative looks, including selective color, night vision, miniature, ... PROS: (1) includes the same high quality 14-bit 16.2MP sensor found in the much more expensive D7000 (2) " completely articulating display with a high 921k dot resolution (the same as the D7000, higher than the D5000) (3) records video in full 1080/30p/24p, 720/30p/25p/24p with microphone input - improved over the D3100 (no mic input, 1080p/30 option) (4) improved battery life over the D5000 - rated for 660 shots vs 510 shots (5) records to easy to find, affordable and capacious SD/SDHC/SDXC flash memory ... CONS: (1) shares the same 11-point AF, shutter speed, and metering system as the D3100/D90 - it cant be exactly the same as the D7000! (2) dim pentamirror based optical viewfinder - the same as the D3100, much more annoying to use than the brighter one found on the D7000/D90 (3) lacks the dual control wheels of the D7000/D90
