The OCZ Vertex 3 is a solid state hard drive and one of the first to feature a second generation SandForce processor, making it capable of reaching incredible read and write speeds of up to 550 and 525 megabytes per second. This is a considerable increase over the companys original Vertex 1 and 2 series drives which are only capable of half of that. It was announced on February 24th 2011 along with the Vertex 3 EX and Vertex 3 Pro, with the only differences being capacity selection and in this case an MLC or multi-level-cell NAND flash based design. The Pro version also uses MLC while the EX uses SLC(single-level-cell) NAND flash, which translates to faster access times and cheaper production. These drives use a SATA III 6GBps interface and have been engineered to make the most out of this newer protocol. The entire series also uses TRIM, with which ... PROS: (1) built with the latest 25nm MLC NAND from Micron - smaller and cheaper than the flash used in Intels latest (2) 3-year warranty - might be outdated and slow by the time your warranty runs out! (3) not much more expensive than the Vertex 2, and will probably see price cuts - despite the large performance improvements (4) essentially the same performance as the very expensive enterprise-level Vertex 3 PRO - fewer non-consumer options, less testing / redundancy built in (5) SATA III / 6Gbps interface ... CONS: (1) only available in 120GB and 240GB capacities - no cheaper, smaller version, or 512GB option (2) more expensive than the Vertex 2 at launch - despite using cheaper-to-produce NAND (3) statistically higher failure rates than major competitor(s) (based on previous generation)
